MEDIATED TALKS WITH IFLRA SLOW TO A CRAWL

MEDIATED TALKS WITH IFLRA SLOW TO A CRAWL

The BC Interior Bargaining Committee and the Interior Forest Labour Relations Associations have concluded two days of mediated talks without reaching an agreement.

With the union standing firm on proposals agreed to with Canfor, negotiations have slowed to a crawl as the southern interior employer association tries to come to terms with a deal that has been fashioned on a pattern developed in the north.

While the IFLRA passed on their chance to create the industry pattern earlier this month, dragging their feet through the mediation process simply slows the evitable. Sadly, the IFLRA is dithering on alternate shifting, establishing the BC Family Day as a statutory day off, fencing in Maintenance Chargehands, and incorporating safety language that will ensure trades people work within the scope of their trades training.

Southern interior local unions will now proceed with a strike vote previously planned for this weekend and the BC Interior Bargaining Committee hopes that USW members will deliver a message that will catch the employer’s attention and provide some added incentive to settle.

Mediation with the IFLRA is scheduled to continue next week in Vancouver on November 28th and 29th.
