NDP MLA's Visit for Meeting with USW Local Representatives

Prince George had all of the NDP caucus in town in August for two days for meetings and attending events throughout the City. MLA's Harry Bains past officer with IWA/USW local 2171 and MLA Bill Routley past President of IWA Local 1-80 now USW Local 1-1937 attended a meeting with officers and staff of Local 1-424. This meeting presented an opportunity to express the issues and concerns of USW members in the North and the challenges faced in the future with the Softwood agreement, effects of Mountain Pine Beetle on our timber supply. The inaction on these issues by the present Government set the stage for a very uncertain future and needs to be made a priority. The forest Industry is still the main economic engine for the North and the Province '' Said Don Iwaskow Financial Secretary Local 1-424, progress on addressing these and other issues have been sidelined by hopes in the Natural gas sector which has not generated long term economic activity to date, however Forestry and Mining are here today and supporting both jobs and the economy.
